STAND UP COMEDY WORKSHOPS BEGINNERS AND EXPERIENCED COURSES
MONDAY’S 7.30pm Doyles Pub, Fleet St. D2.
The comedy workshops start every two months, there is a showcase( live gig) at the end of each workshop. To put your name down for the next one, contact us, and to secure a place its 100€ non-refundable deposit.
Starting in Doyles Pub, Fleet Street, 7.30pm every Monday for 5 weeks before the live show. We have a limited number of places and so the best way we can do it is to have a first come, first served, basis.
The way we secure places is this:
It is 300€ for the 6 workshops (250€ unwaged) this includes the gig at the end which is your 'graduation night' if you like. (An optional performance for the chickens)
If you want to secure a deposit for a place this week:
Places are held for people with 100€ deposit.
It is possible to arrange a time to meet and have a chat to see if it might suit you.
The remaining balance must be paid on the first night.
ON THE FIRST NIGHT OF THE WORKSHOPS:
The workshop begins at 7.30 downstairs on the Trinity side of Doyles pub (opp. the Screen cinema, Pearse Street Garda Station, end of D'Olier St. side wall of Trinity College - if you cant find it then, don’t show up!) We will have a coffee/pint and then go upstairs for the workshop where they will be held every week starting 7.30. We will start at the latest at 8pm depending on everyone showing up on time. We will have a break about 9pm and finish up by 10.30 at the latest on the first night.
YOU MUST BE JOKING!
We are not going to stand anyone up and demand that they have 20 minutes of well practised, gold material prepared for us all to sit there and criticise! These workshops are for people who have never done stand up to get a set together, or for comedians who are writing new material so there is no pressure on you to 'have material' ok! so relax!
If you have any ideas bring them in with you, We'd love to have a look at them so anything that you might have been thinking of in terms of jokes or style, or stories all the better. If you like, bring a friend there is nothing like having someone to bounce off! Even if they don’t come along the second night.
BRING A LITTLE NOTEBOOK AND A PEN:
Yes, bring a little notebook and a pen, its helpful to jot down any ideas that might help you write your material in the next two weeks, before we work on stage crafting it into a set!
WEEKLY NOTES:
We will be giving you notes that follow up what we say within the workshops but there is no harm on having a pen around as something always clicks for people that works for them at different times.
What we hope you get out of this:
This is very important to us, we really want this to be of great benefit to you, both in going through this process of writing and presenting material and the performance at the end, even if you never do it again, its a fantastic thing to do, and has been compared to Bungi jumping and parachuting for the thrill of it all!
THIS IS TO PRODUCE MATERIAL TO DO STAND UP COMEDY!
Its not our workshop,
its yours,
that means that whatever you put in you get out,
Theres this old phrase you may have heard of ' if its not on the page, its not on the stage'
or, another way of saying it, if you dont have it written down you'll forget it!
if you do some writing, you can easily get 3 TO 5 MINUTES of material each week, usually people get 20-30 minutes of material out of this, so we will ask you to at least try to write something for every week.
We are only looking for 5-7 minutes of a performance at the end, if you have more, even better, then there is more to choose from!
The point of doing a set that short is that 7 minutes is the average 'open slot' in any 'open mike' club. There is no point in doing a Billy Connolly 20 minutes if they are only going to kick you off after 7 (or less!) so its better to have a really good solid 7 minutes than a ropey 15!
So, its all ahead of you! We look forward to seeing you for the next course Monday at 7.30pm in Doyles Pub, Fleet street where we will be starting the first night of the workshops.
PARKING:
Forget about it! You can drive around the block for a half hour and you might get a lucky space when the guards finish their shifts at 7pm, otherwise you are double yellows and we know a guy who got clamped the first night of the course earlier this year, he didnt find that amusing the whole night cost him about 400€. So, cycle, walk, or leave early, there isn’t any guarantee of parking (its the middle of the city centre! what did you think!) So you might be better just putting it in the carpark... but do a drive by you might be lucky...
DRINKING:
We will be doing the workshops in the function room above the bar, that means there is no bar upstairs while the workshops are going on, nor are we encouraged to steal pints, but the bar is open downstairs and if you want to get a pint (for the nerves) at half time or the beginning thats fine, but be it on your own shoulders if your driving!
