‘Process, Bonding and DeBono’s Six Hats’
Group work with an emphasis on De Bono’s Six Hats Lateral Thinking

DeBono’s Six Hats*
Analysis of Decision making process in a Creative Environment
This workshop gives an exciting and entertaining demonstration and group activity of working together for a collective goal.a workshop in lateral and ‘outside the box’ thinking

Using DeBono’s Hats Creatively:
What I have done is to apply this lateral thinking method to creating a film or television programme. Each person brings their own element to it and each part of the process is applied from start to finish so that everyone can see their contribution and the part they played in each element of the process. It is a safe, fun and effective method of learning this new approach to task management and decision making. On the strength of applying the Six Hats Method the benefits are obvious and it can be used repeatedly for many different situations where effective and time efficient problem solving is crucial.

Planning and engineering of the day:
Each day is different. The format I have used before is to take people outside the office and bring them to a neutral space away from the everyday situation. I use a central hotel in town, where they can order their food an hour before lunch and sit outside the room for an hour before returning to the workshop. All of this is done in an informal atmosphere and usually the programme takes a full day.

My Background:

In 2004 Ciarán McMahon
(36) qualified in an Honours Masters in Holistic Development and Group Facilitation from DCU.

Following my qualification I wanted to put what I had learned to the test. I began teaching drama and improvisation workshops.

Following this there was an increasing demand for stand up comedy workshops.

In the evenings I had performed with an improvisation and stand up comedy troupe on a weekly basis.

As a result, I decided to combine one of my hobbies with what I had recently qualified in.

My Current Position

Having worked as a team facilitator and youth leader in outreach teams, it was a natural extension for me to enter into teaching adults.

I have now been teaching stand up, improvisation and drama workshops to adults on a full time basis for over five years. Most recently I have expanded into creative comedy and team building workshops for companies that include RTE and TV3 and external production companies for Channel 4.

The skills that I develop within the workshops are based on exercises that generate a creative and fun element to group work. These exercises include the whole group in an unthreatening way, where everyone is happy to get involved and see their part in the process.
