At Stand-Up Ireland we run comedy workshops to teach you how to live - not die on stage. The idea of these workshops came about from the need to be confident in the material and yourself before stepping on stage. ‘Six years ago I stood on a stage in Kilkenny Cats Laughs and had 30 minutes of stand up material that I thought was going to go down a storm.

Twenty minutes into the set the material and set had crumbled and I effectively ‘died’ on stage, I swore I would never do it again!’ One year and a Masters degree later I was back performing and running a comedy club in the Hapenny Bridge Inn twice a week.

It is from this experience that I designed the workshops as I realised the need for proper preparation, advice and feedback!

One Night Stand- Up!
(One Day / Evening Workshops)

Themes include:
• Improvisation exercises to warm up your spontaneity and imagination
• ‘The concept of the art!’
• Character: knowing who you are up there
• Material: ideas for writing your set
• Emotion: the vehicle for material.
• Construction of a gag: Triplet
• Imagination Freedom and Absolute Power- the key to performance
• Meeting out judgement.
• Concepts behind the words
• Performance: Ideas on converting your set to a live performance

The plan is to have fun in this workshop, and through all the different inter-active exercises and improvisation, develop an attitude and frame of mind conducive to doing stand up comedy. Simple? Not really. There are a lot of different hats to wear during the stand up performance from 'page to stage'.

So I will be touching on the different elements of the mind, parts of your body! And your personality (if you have one) that need to combine to make you a good stand up. Finally, we will then throw you up on the stage for a 5 minute performance infront of your budding peers! You will not be a professional stand up at the end of this. That takes time. But I hope you will have tasted the insanity and the madness, if even for a moment, that sends people over the edge into performing on a full time basis.

Ciaran McMahon has an Honours Masters Degree from DCU in Group Dynamics and Facilitation. He has been on stage doing improv and stand up and MCing for the last 10 years. Since his Masters Ciaran has set up standupireland.com and has been facilitating and leading workshops that include such themes as Writing, Presentation and Performance for Stand Up, Drama and Improvisation Comedy. Many of his past- students now perform regularly in the Laughter Lounge, The International Bar, many of Irelands top clubs, and beyond.

Private Tuition / Public Speaking

Best Man Speeches / Public Speaking
Contact me and I will let you know when the next one is planned.
One of peoples biggest fears is public speaking I love it!
I know how to make it easy for you - I’ve been getting people on stage for 6 years!

The key thing is:
You are not going to die
You will not have a heart attack
Your fly will not be open
Nothing bad will happen
They will like you
And when you are finished they will applaud your courage

Most Important:
You will have done it!

Most of the time you can’t see past getting up there,
The most important thing to remember…is that
It doesn’t last forever

And when it’s done?

The relief is amazing!!!
Its nearly better than… doing it!

I will take the fear out of public speaking, and I’ll give you the confidence you need to get up there

You never know, when I’m done with you, you might even like it!

Structure of Workshops:

• One Day Workshop
We meet for One day, we see how we get on

• Group of three
We meet for two more and we have a script by the end

• Weekend workshop.
We do it all in one go!

• Group of six workshops we meet over a longer period of time

This can be done as part of a workshop or individually.
We meet for a three hour workshop and we see how we get on.
If you like it we continue if you don’t, we never see each other again…

Topics:
• ‘The basics of public speaking’
• Character & Confidence: Being comfortable with who you are when you are up there
• Ideas for what to say
• Dealing with the nerves.
• Presentation: How to put it together
• Express Yourself!
• Back to basics – all you have to do is…
• The simple keys to a good talk.
• Performance: A practice to see how you get on!
• Homework time!

-Text me, give me a call, and we can set something up.

Or we can meet up and then see where it goes from there.
The main thing that stood out and I can’t emphasise this enough was the positive atmosphere that was generated by yourselves. You really were great at creating the right atmosphere for people to share their work in a really positive way.
C.

I never thought I would have gone on stage 5 weeks ago. I was actually thinking of cancelling but I guess it was down to your teaching that I didnt and went on stage, so yes your very good....
Julianne

Ciaran really generates a positive atmosphere for people to work together. Great at improv exercises. Really helpful with constructive criticism and provides really good guidance on improving material. Great idea with the homework.

Best Man Speeches
As a result of performing in so many situations I am well used to dealing with the fear of going ‘out there’ in front of people.
I am also well used to bringing people on to the stage for the first time. I have been freeing people up to speak in public for over 6 years. Between all the groups I have worked with and all the individuals that have come to me each of them have been given the confidence to do it.

Through the medium of a few simple exercises I will get you comfortable and relaxed with speaking and bring you through some simple exercises that will put you at ease

This is a natural easy going method to bring you to public speaking in a fun way. The key to this is to put you at ease and allow you to feel comfortable. Once you are comfortable the ideas, confidence and words begin to flow.

If I can get people to perform as comedians - I can easily get someone to speak.

A note from Ciarán:
...I met Leandro Morgado in 2008 and since meeting up with this guy, I have wanted him to bring the magic of his wisdom and knowledge to anyone that is willing to listen.

If you were ever thinking about going that one step forward in character and performance, this is the guy to speak to, Leandro has ‘gone there’ and lived to tell the tale.

There are no small rooms to peform in Portugal, what you have to do is book a 150 seater theatre, finance and promote the show, put it on, and hope for the best...
Leandro made that step several years ago,

He has since toured nationally with his award winning show from that day onwards, In 2009 he wrote a second full evening show called ‘Status – Mine is bigger than yours’. It received a standing ovation on its premiere in October 2009 and continues to sell out theatres nationally.

Most people have one show in them, Leandro Morgado has proven that he can write perform and produce two sell out top quality shows in a row. A rare talent.

Leandro will dissect the finest points about character writing and performance and bring you to a world that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. This, is a genuine insight into what it takes to bring a professional show to the stage.
